A new ferry nearing completion at the French shipyard of STX France Lorient will have a pioneering new type of electric propulsion, writes Dag Pike.

 
This all-electric vessel will use super capacitors to store the electrical energy in place of the normal battery systems with a considerable saving in weight and cost.

This new ferry is designed to operate on a short route of just a couple of miles across the river at Lorient. Its innovative electrical propulsion system has been carried out under a research programme initiated by the STX France parent company. This ECORIZON R & D programme is part of the research being carried out by STX and for the ferry design, Stirling Design International were involved in the project.
 
The super capacitor electrical storage system is an extension of the technology found in energy recovery systems such as that used on some road vehicles and on Formula 1 cars in their KERS system. These store the energy that would normally be lost due to braking and make it available for powering electric motors when acceleration is required. On marine applications there is no opportunity for energy recovery but on the ferry application the super capacitor can be recharged very quickly so this can be done every time the vessel docks and this can provide enough power for the vessel on the short route of the Lorient crossing.
 
The ferry is based on low resistance catamaran hull 22.10m in length with reverse angle bows. This vessel operates in displacement mode and has a maximum speed of 10 knots. The propellers and pod drives have been supplied by Masson and the electrical system was developed by Batscap in France. Two 50 hp electric motors power the pod drives.
 
The ferry is designed to carry 150 passengers and has accommodation for 10 bicycles. The passengers are accommodated in a single full width saloon with some outside seating in the bow area. A raised pilot house allows an all round view for controlling the ferry which is designed for bow docking at each terminal.
 
Solar panels are installed on the deck above the saloon to supplement the capacitor power and a diesel powered generator has been installed with adequate power to propel the vessel. This generator was added to the specification to allow the ferry more flexibility in operation so that it can operate independently of the charging points when it is required to operate on alternative routes.
 
This ferry design using super capacitors is claimed to be a world first of a new generation of zero emission ferries. STX Lorient claim that there are many ferry routes around the world that operate on only short distances for which the use of the super capacitor system would be suitable. Experience with this first design could also lead to a wider application of the technology on harbour craft and even some leisure craft.

Since 2007, BRETAGNE POLE NAVAL has created a major centre for quality shipbuilding, repair and conversion in Western France, joining forces, competences and skills in an advanced way to meet international ship owners and operators needs.

New challenges in Marine renewable and Oil & Gaz

Major projects in 2012-2013 will be to contribute to develop skills and resources especially in Marine Renewable and "oil & gas" To prefigure a French sector of offshore wind farms offshore Saint Brieuc, all economic Regional players decided to get together and structure themselves. They entrust the coordination of this project to Bretagne Pôle Naval within a new committee dedicated specifically the project named “Ailes Marines” This program to start in 2015/2016 represents an investment of €2 billion and is expected to create 2000 jobs in Western France, including a significant part for Bretagne. The capacity will be 500 MW for 100 wind turbines. Communities are already working for the infrastructure meet the expectations of investors. Industrialists in Bretagne Pôle Naval cluster have skills and a high level of products and services for the preparation and implementation and for operation of maintenance of these offshore wind farms. They also contribute to the development of other marine renewable energy installations (floating turbines, tidal turbines…)

Bretagne Pôle Naval aim at reinforce industries core business, meaning the shipbuilding and repair activities. Facing international competitors, another goal is to activate seeking contracts in the Oil and gas industry and increase export business. BPN has set up significant actions to improve competitiveness by relying primarily on innovation and training, all in the service of production.

To achieve these objectives, BPN works in conjunction with other marine organizations and maritime competitiveness pole which supports innovative projects and contributing research and development activities such as “ship of the future”.

The executive committee of the cluster Bretagne Pole Naval chaired by J. Dubost has recruited its new managing director, Mrs Anne Marie CUESTA who will hold in the coming weeks the positions previously held until end of year 2011 by Mr G. L’Haridon.

BRETAGNE POLE NAVAL looking for his "kingpin", capable of grasping the whole range of professions and skills of Breton industry in naval and marine energy sectors. His choice was focused on a woman whose career gives it a solid experience in management, as management skills applied to human resources, including knowledge gained in various business activities within civilian and military shipbuilding and ship repairs, offshore oil & gas and marine energy.

Aged 46 years, this "hard working passionate about the naval world," after law school has specialized in Human Resources. His keen sense of diplomacy and empathy associated with rigor enabled her over the years to occupy positions of high responsibility.
For 20 years her career has evolved in corporations and large groups of nautical and naval industries.
She assured for 10 years including important functions in the area of purchasing for ship repair and in Human Resource Management (600 employees) in Lorient Naval & Industry shipyard (Group Leroux & Lotz) become Alstom Leroux Naval (ALN) after its acquisition by Alstom. For 10 years, Anne-Marie CUESTA is part of the management team of Sofresid Engineering, an engineering and naval offshore subsidiary of Saipem. She is both Director of Human Resources of the group of 450 employees which is attached the establishment of Lorient which she is also Managing Director to date.

After the implementation of the general operation of the cluster Bretagne Pole Naval founded in 2007, the work of the new Managing Director is wanted fieldwork and proximity to 85 member companies. She will facilitate the many activities of the group of professionals, coordinate the work of various committees (military vessels, ship repair, oil and gas, marine renewable, yachts, industrial and port infrastructure, employment and training, communication actions) and promote actions of the cluster. Anne-Marie Cuesta, as the Managing Director of Bretagne Pole Naval wants to be available, serving Breton companies to help to develop shipbuilding and ship repair activities and assist in the diversification of businesses. A major project in 2012-2013 will be to contribute to develop the skills and resources of members companies of BPN, especially to enable them to access to activities in Renewable Marine Energy sector. She will continue the actions related to training and management (convention EDEC Naval, Shipbuilding Professional license, work within the committee for Employment & Training ...) and to initiate new collaborations and initiatives with various professional, institutional, social partners ...
Anne-Marie Cuesta will host the next General Assembly of BPN therefore to be held June 14 in Brest, and will present the Action Plan 2012-2013 of the cluster.

French shipyard BERNARD delivers a second pilot boat ORC 190.2

Next thursday, FRESENA, 18 meters pilot boat will be delivered to LOTSENVERSETZBOOTE TECHNISCHE FACHSTELLE NORDWEST pilots and leave Lorient for the port of Emden in northern Germany. After FRYA delivered in May 2011, this unit is the second in a series of 4 vessels for German pilots.

Marc Bernard, technical director of shipyard Bernard: "The prototype of the pilot boat named Frya is operating for almost a year in the area of Borkum from the port of Emden. It has proved highly satisfactory in particular on its behavior at sea in rough weather. We are pleased to deliver her sister ship after confirming a series of tests: a maximum speed exceeding 30 knots, a noise level below 75 decibels in the wheelhouse and many technical innovations including the warming bridge and handrail tailored to work in northern Germany in extreme cold. A third vessel named "Burkana" will be delivered in September to Borckum before a fourth vessel to the pilotage station of Bremerhaven."

Frank Dinnebier, boat Captain Lotsenversetzboote Technische Fachstelle Nordwest: "I've driven the first boat Frya and with Fresena we confirmed the performance of the ORC 190 ship with high speed of 31 knots in good weather and which is much safer and comfortable for our pilots. This is a great change that makes interventions more effective, fast and safe than with the smaller pilot boats limited to 6 knots we used so far.”

Designed and built in the shipyard BERNARD at Locmiquelic, near Lorient in Brittany, this concept of “all weather” craft allows for an exceptional vessel which meets the stringent requirements of the pilot stations in the ports of Northern Europe. The shipyard is able to meet the challenge by offering a pilot boat able, in sea conditions force 4-5, to ensure an efficient service while combining comfort, speed, maneuverability and safety.

The first international convention will bring together decision-makers in the sector of Marine Renewable Energies (EMR).

Bretagne Pole Naval, the cluster of companies in the shipbuilding and ship repair and marine renewable energy industries which contributes to the development of industrial sector in the EMR and the Pôle Mer Bretagne will be present under the same banner, on a stand 36m ² federated by Bretagne Developpement Innovation (The enterprise development agency of Brittany region)

The Cluster Bretagne Pôle Naval has federated, since its inception in 2007, 85 companies. Major center for engineering, shipbuilding and ship repair, it also contributes to the development of an industrial network in marine energy.
The offshore wind represents a real opportunity for development and restructuring of the major French ports including the ports of Brest or Lorient. More broadly, the marine renewable energy (EMR) is for many players in the shipbuilding industry, a scope of maritime know-how, whether supply laying or maintenance vessels or power generators themselves
Bretagne Pole Naval thus acts especially in linking businesses and contractors. In April 2011, the cluster has organized with the Brest Chamber of Commerce an important conference on offshore wind, which was held in Brest over 300 participants.
Bretagne Pole Naval presented the results of a study entrusted to the firm GL Garrad Hassan. This study on the industrial organization of fixed offshore wind projects presented especially analysis needs of contractors that are project developers, energy companies, manufacturers of wind turbines. Meanwhile, a survey of area businesses, their skills and their resources was conducted and led to the creation of a directory whose 2012 version has 100 companies (70 in 2011) that can be positioned in the chain of value as a partner, supplier, service provider or subcontractor.

The departure of Gilles L’ Haridon

After four years in the service of naval and marine energy sectors in Brittany, Gilles L'Haridon, Managing Director, leaves office in the cluster Bretagne Pôle Naval.He contributed significantly to the establishment and organization of the association, to the work of commissions and to animation of many meetings. The success of its actions can be measured by the number of members which is now 85 companies spread throughout Brittany, the confidence of the State, the Regional Council and the ICC, and the high participation in meetings organized between the companies and the contractors.
Gilles L’Haridon joins the company Eole Generation of GDF SUEZ group, where he will exercise functions relating to offshore wind projects and marine renewable energy.The activity of Bretagne Pole Naval continues with the active participation of its President Jacques Dubost and with Jean-Daniel Fourdrinier.
We thank Gilles L'Haridon for all work done during these four years, and wish him great success in his new mission.

PERSPECTIVES OF DEVELOPMENT FOR BRETON ENGINEERING AND SHIPBUILDING BRETON

Back from EUROPORT Rotterdam held from 8 to 11 November, Bretagne Pôle Naval who was participating for the second time to this meeting place for European shipbuilding and ship repair, inland navigation, port services and the dredging industry is back with some encouraging signs for our companies in Brittany.

On Its collective stand dedicated to promote industrial and port infrastructure and companies in the shipbuilding industry, BPN also welcomed 5 of its members who had traveled to the Netherlands: The shipyards BERNARD and GLEHEN, SEGULA Technology engineering  company , the Port of Concarneau professionals association and mechanics engineering Ateliers NORMAND.

EUROPORT 2011 with 1100 exhibitors from 30 countries showed some optimism reflected in the many innovations presented. According to Jos Van Der Green, president of the Chamber of Commerce and president of Europort Rotterdam, "the future of the maritime world is our responsibility and we must remain competitive through innovation and technology." This is to respond to current issues such as the dominance of China on the world stage, sustainable development ... During the inauguration, a projection to 2041 to estimate what will happen then: scarcity fossil energy, climate change, increased need for drinking water and food .... The maritime economy of the future will leave the least possible impact on the planet, leading us to the ship with zero emissions. "Europe must invest today to predict the rise in oil prices, investing in safety and training to maximize his skills and production in an economic world where it occupies less space (China produces 50 % of goods and also investing in the shipping ...) " said Bernhardt Meyer, CEO of CESA. "We need to offer sophisticated vessels and innovations which benefits to the owners in order to optimize costs, save energy and protect the environment," concluded Bodewes Tecla, CEO of De Kaap site and Maritima Green Technology, voted "Business Woman of 2011 "by his peers.

Glehen shipyards have appropriate skills and infrastructure to build, for example, river barges or pushboats for waterways industry. In addition, the search for solutions to reduce energy consumption for vessels (as is the case on the trawler under construction at the shipyard) is one aspect that has particularly caught the attention of visitors and the press .
Dutch professionals are very interested in the pilot boats built by the shipyard BERNARD. Already in Germany, Belgium and Norway, the Breton shipyard could soon work with an agent in the Netherlands.
SEGULA Technologies presented its new embedded software for the calculation of stability and rationalization of the load named STABILOAD, available in two versions one for waterways, one for maritime shipping. The exhibition has allowed the company to validate the market and reach out to prospects.
This show is also an opportunity to make a major technical and economic survey including dredging and harbor towing.
The company also had the opportunity to attend numerous conferences around the "ship of the future" topic and participate in meetings B to B "Marimatch 2011" organized by Enterprise Europe Network.

Bretagne Pole Naval distributed to visitors more than 100 copies of the first edition of the directory 2012 of shibuilding and repair in French Brittany. This tool was well received by the various contacts that have seen, as expected, a fast and efficient way to identify in Brittany companies which in their projects, will be their partners, suppliers or subcontractors.It is also for suppliers, a lot at the show, a quick way to identify potential customers in Brittany and make their offer of products and services.

French Pavilion was federated by GICAN which brought together about twenty French companies.
Bernard Boidin, economic adviser of the Embassy of France in the Netherlands, visiting the show, assured business support and availability of services and the Economic Mission in The Hague to help develop trade between the two countries .

The next edition of Europort will be held from 5 to 8 November 2013.

The cluster BRETAGNE POLE NAVAL was born in 2007 to create a major centre for quality shipbuilding, repair and conversion in Western France, joining forces, competences and skills in an advanced way to meet international ship owners and operators needs.

To provide global services for ship repairs and maintenance in harbour, overseas or in transit we are now a cluster of 74 companies, experts in all professions of naval industries. Experimented projects teams with a wide experience in the industry from ship repair to new building are supported by a workforce of 10 000 skilled and flexible people and contractor infrastructure dedicated to customer service.

In EUROPORT, some of those companies will meet you in the stand of Bretagne Pôle Naval: Bernard shipyard, specialist in pilot boats and rescue boats, Glehen shipyard has been building all types of ship since 1911. Ateliers NORMAND is a specialist in marine mechanical engineering. Segula Technologies Group is specialized in the fields of engineering, consulting and associated services. SPIE Ouest Centre shipbuilding and repair division driving project management for civilan and military shipbuilding. The Port of CONCARNEAU professionals association is regrouping 45 companies working in shipbuilding, repair and conversion.
At Europort, Segula Technologies will present STABILOAD INLAND WATERS, loading software which rationalize and make secure the container transportation on inland waterways. Glehen shipyard is currently building a trawler integrating new technologies to save energy. Ateliers Normand ensures complete assembly of the propulsion of this trawler with an energy saving propeller pump system.
The cluster will present a useful “Directory 2012 Shipbuilding and repair in French Brittany” which will allow ship managers, purchasers, operators and ship owners to identify Breton companies and their skills and expertise for shipbuilding, repair and conversion. This is completed by a specific brochure on French Brittany port facilities.

BPN also made a brochure “The industrial network of French Brittany: a partner for your projects” dedicated to investors and industrialists from Offshore Wind. This is in completion with its directory of Companies of Offshore Wind Industry in Brittany.
